Supporting Rehabilitation and Rehoming for Dog Abuse Survivors
Back in December, we proudly unveiled the ASPCA Recovery & Rehabilitation Center in Pawling, New York-a state-of-the-art 33,000-square-foot haven designed to deliver comprehensive behavioral and medical services for animals saved in collaboration with the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
Countless animals arriving through our NYPD partnership bear deep physical and emotional scars from the cruelty and mistreatment they’ve endured. When legal proceedings lead to criminal charges, these animals often need extended rehabilitation until ownership rights are resolved. Our brand-new center provides the essential space, dedicated time, and expert support required for healing. It addresses both behavioral challenges and medical conditions that inflict pain and hinder adoptability, dramatically boosting our ability to serve the most at-risk dogs from New York City.
This latest addition marks our fourth specialized facility focused on round-the-clock care, enrichment activities, and targeted medical and behavioral therapies for abuse and neglect victims. It joins the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in Weaverville, North Carolina; the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center in Columbus, Ohio; and the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center in New York City.
Rescuing Dogs from Suspected Dogfighting Operations
Even though dogfighting constitutes a serious felony across every state in the nation, this barbaric practice unfortunately endures in communities of all kinds. In 2025 alone, our National Field Response team successfully extracted nearly 250 dogs from environments suspected of involvement in dogfighting activities.
During March, our experts stepped in to support a major suspected dogfighting investigation in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where authorities removed dozens of dogs, including vulnerable puppies, from a single property.
Just a month later in April, we mobilized once more to rescue over 150 dogs from 10 separate sites spanning Dillon and Marion counties in South Carolina. We revisited the state later that year to aid in freeing even more dogs from similar dire circumstances.
Every one of these brave survivors received essential treatment at an ASPCA Recovery Center. Among them was Tulle, a spirited four-month-old puppy seized from one of the South Carolina locations in April 2025.
Following three months of dedicated care under our watchful team, Tulle’s adoption profile went live on our website, aiming to connect him with the perfect family. His captivating image immediately caught the attention of Felicia S., who arranged to meet him on July 17.
At their introduction, Felicia hesitated momentarily, concerned about matching Tulle’s boundless energy, but her coworker, whom she’d invited along, encouraged her to give it a try. By the end of that visit, Felicia made the joyful decision to bring Tulle home that very day.
It took a couple of weeks for the full poignancy of the date to register with Felicia. “July 17 marks the anniversary of my fiancé’s funeral,” she shared with us. “The connection didn’t hit me right away. I was reviewing Tulle’s paperwork, and the date seemed oddly familiar. Then it clicked-it was the funeral date. I thought, ‘This was clearly destined to be.’”
Honoring her departed fiancé, Felicia gave Tulle a meaningful new name: King. “King was the surname I was set to take,” she explained. “It fits him perfectly! He’s absolutely the ruler of our home now.”
Securing Forever Homes for Rescued Animals
The path to rescue and safeguard animals is often fraught with challenges, yet nothing compares to the joy of witnessing their happy, contented expressions once they’ve settled into compassionate forever homes. With your invaluable support, here are some heartwarming examples of animals who received the second chances they so richly deserved in 2025.
Mere days before Christmas 2024, a kind-hearted passerby discovered a severely emaciated pit bull mix abandoned roadside, his body marred by deep lacerations, burns-including a massive gash around his neck-scabs across his head and ears, and ear discoloration signaling the onset of frostbite. He appeared disoriented and frail, barely able to stand even briefly, compounded by a fractured left pelvis. Dubbed Peppermint, this resilient dog was promptly saved by NYPD officers and rushed to the ASPCA for emergency intervention.
Given his life-threatening condition, Peppermint demanded round-the-clock intensive therapy right away. Our veterinarians and caregivers worked swiftly to stabilize his body temperature, administering intravenous fluids, a critical blood transfusion, and meticulous daily bandage changes for his neck injury until it was ready for surgical closure. A carefully managed refeeding regimen was also implemented to restore him to a healthy body weight.
Despite the immense suffering and ordeal he’d survived, Peppermint displayed remarkable gentleness throughout his recovery, swiftly winning over the hearts of our entire team with his affectionate nature.
Approximately three months of unwavering attention later, Peppermint had made astonishing strides: he’d packed on 15 pounds-equivalent to half his initial body weight-his neck wounds had fully mended, and he was moving confidently on his previously injured hind leg.
With his transformation complete, it was time for Peppermint to embark on his next chapter. His endearing profile appeared on our adoption page, where it enchanted Sherry and Kevin K. The devoted couple embarked on a grueling six-hour journey just to meet him and welcome him into their lives. Now known as Rudy, he revels in dashing across their rural property and romping playfully with Sherry and Kevin’s grandchildren.
In April 2025, NYPD officers discovered a young cat accompanied by two dogs enduring deplorable, unhygienic living conditions. The trio was transported without delay to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center for immediate medical attention and nurturing care.
A thorough evaluation revealed that the cat, subsequently named Gustavo, suffered from multiple broken teeth, a chin laceration, and a pelvic fracture. Fortunately, surgery wasn’t required; instead, he underwent six weeks of strict cage rest to promote natural healing.
Beyond his injuries, Gustavo was alarmingly underweight at just three and a half pounds and showed insatiable hunger-far below the typical six-pound benchmark for a healthy kitten his age. Our team crafted a tailored refeeding strategy to gradually build his strength and mass.
His outgoing, charming demeanor endeared him to staff immediately, earning him ample playtime and socialization sessions in his enclosure as he recuperated from the fracture.
Come mid-May, Gustavo had reached an optimal weight, and fresh X-rays confirmed his pelvis had fully knit back together. This green light allowed his transfer to the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City, where he could charm potential families. It wasn’t long before Jacob and Dana were smitten by his irresistible features and chose to adopt him. These days, Gustavo delights in bird-watching from the windowsill, batting at his toys, and conquering his personal cat castle.
Dorothy, May, and Sweetie were among nearly 90 Morgan horses liberated from a breeding operation in Madison County, Montana, during late January 2025. For close to three months, our on-site teams delivered consistent daily husbandry, veterinary checkups, and holistic support to these equines until authorities finalized legal outcomes.
By April, we secured full legal custody, paving the way for rehoming these magnificent animals into suitable environments. We organized an intensive six-day adoption event right at the site, but as it wound down, the elder mares Dorothy, May, and Sweetie remained without takers.
Enter Virginia “Gin” K. and her husband Bill, who showed up for one of the final slots. They instantly bonded with Dorothy and May, committing to adopt them on the spot. As the pair was prepared for transport in Gin and Bill’s trailer, news broke that Sweetie’s scheduled adopter had no-showed. Sensing the moment, Sweetie let out a heartfelt whinny toward the couple.
“I beckoned Sweetie with a treat,” Gin recounted. “I joked, ‘Our trailer fits three … let’s take her along!’”
Once all paperwork was squared away, our staff escorted Gin and Bill to the driveway’s edge, erupting in cheers and tears as the trio of horses headed off to their shared new beginning. The emotional scene left every responder and team member profoundly moved by this perfect, serendipitous union.
