Over 20 Pomeranians, Pups Included, Rescued from Squalor in Brooklyn Flat

Following a request from the New York City Police Department and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, our organization is now providing care for over 20 dogs resembling Pomeranians that were taken from a Brooklyn apartment earlier this week. Officers from the NYPD came upon these animals, which included more than 15 puppies along with several adult dogs, existing in horrific conditions surrounded by their own waste in a foul-smelling, unclean apartment located in the Greenpoint neighborhood. Reports indicate that the dogs lacked immediate availability of food or water during this ordeal.

Once initial overnight treatment was administered at our partnered veterinary clinics, the dogs were moved to one of our centers in Manhattan on Sunday. There, they underwent thorough forensic veterinary examinations, along with comprehensive medical evaluations, behavioral assessments, and necessary treatments. Additionally, we are supporting the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office in their continuing criminal probe into the matter.

Brooklyn DA Stresses Zero Tolerance for Animal Neglect

“No animal deserves to endure suffering stemming from neglect or apathy. Housing dogs in such deplorable conditions without proper provisions for food or water violates the law, and our Animal Crimes Unit addresses these incidents with utmost gravity,” stated Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “I extend my thanks to the ASPCA for the dedicated, compassionate attention they are giving these dogs and for their steadfast collaboration as the investigation moves forward.”

A significant number of these dogs and puppies have been relocated to the ASPCA Recovery & Rehabilitation Center in Pawling, New York. This state-of-the-art facility is specifically designed for the long-term care and recovery of dogs saved via our collaboration with the NYPD. Spanning 33,000 square feet, the center commenced operations in late 2025, greatly enhancing our ability to accommodate victims of suspected cruelty originating from New York City rescues.

All of these rescued dogs will stay under our supervision until legal decisions regarding their future are finalized.

Specialized Care for Trauma Recovery

“A substantial portion of the animals entering our care through our NYPD partnership exhibit both physical injuries and emotional trauma potentially caused by suspected abuse and neglect. When legal proceedings lead to charges, these cases often demand extended rehabilitation periods until ownership status is resolved by the courts. The ASPCA Recovery & Rehabilitation Center was established precisely to offer the essential space, duration, and expert treatment required for animals extracted from dire circumstances, such as those encountered in this Brooklyn incident,” explained Elizabeth Brandler, vice president of ASPCA Cruelty Response. “We deeply appreciate our veterinary collaborators-including Blue Pearl Brooklyn and VERG Brooklyn, who delivered urgent interim care for these dogs-as well as the NYPD and the New York City district attorneys’ offices for their unwavering dedication to combating animal cruelty throughout the city’s five boroughs.”
