Approximately one year ago, during January 2025, a compassionate individual discovered a dog who had been cruelly abandoned inside garbage bags, with his mouth and legs bound tightly using shoestrings. This kind stranger promptly contacted the New York Police Department (NYPD), who then transported the severely injured animal-subsequently named Lazlo-to the Animal Care Center (ACC) of New York City. Given his life-threatening condition, Lazlo was quickly moved to the ASPCA Animal Hospital for specialized emergency treatment.
Dr. Kovach, the director of veterinary services at the ASPCA’s recovery center in New York City, vividly recalls the dog’s arrival: “He arrived in a severely compromised state.” The poor animal suffered from extensive polytrauma, including a fractured nasal bone, a broken right cheekbone, and a dislocated right hip. Compounding these horrors were indications of a potential traumatic brain injury, bleeding and swelling in his right eye, a blood-filled swelling of the right ear flap known as an aural hematoma, painful ear infections, a broken tooth, widespread skin infections, and a combination of old healing wounds alongside fresh injuries.
These devastating injuries would be unimaginable for any creature to withstand, yet Lazlo endured even more: he was severely emaciated, profoundly dehydrated, and exhibited neurological symptoms stemming from his suspected brain trauma. To provide the immediate, highly skilled medical intervention required, Lazlo was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where the dedicated team of experts initiated comprehensive treatment protocols.
“After stabilizing him beyond the critical phase of his traumatic brain injury, we performed surgery to repair his dislocated hip and carried out neutering procedures,” explained Dr. Kovach. “Additionally, we implemented a carefully monitored refeeding regimen to address his extreme emaciation.”
A refeeding plan involves the gradual reintroduction of calories to prevent the onset of refeeding syndrome-a dangerous and potentially lethal condition that arises when nutrition is restored too rapidly, causing severe metabolic imbalances and disruptive fluid shifts throughout the body. As Lazlo’s condition improved, he was able to transition out of the ICU and proceed with his recovery at the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center.
Post-surgery, Lazlo underwent rigorous physical therapy sessions twice a day for a full six weeks, helping him regain strength and mobility. By March, remarkable progress was evident: “Lazlo had achieved a healthy body weight and developed a normal walking gait-both of which were desperately needed when he first entered the recovery center,” Dr. Kovach noted with satisfaction.
With his physical recovery on solid footing, Lazlo was deemed ready to continue healing in a foster home environment. It was at this juncture that he encountered Brett and Gary (names changed at their request), a devoted couple whose lives would soon intertwine with his.
Meeting His Match
Brett and Gary had shared a loving relationship for four years and decided that 2025 was the perfect time to welcome their ideal canine companion into their lives-what they affectionately called their “soul dog.” Both had cherished dogs during their childhoods and had long dreamed of pet parenthood, but demanding careers had previously delayed their plans. That changed when they took the initiative to apply as dog fosters through the ASPCA program.
“A couple of months after submitting our application, we spotted Lazlo featured in one of the foster updates,” Gary shared. “His photo was irresistibly cute, drawing us in immediately, and the details about his background convinced us he might be the perfect fit for our home.”
Eager to connect, the couple visited the center to meet Lazlo in person, and they were immediately captivated by his affectionate and unbreakable spirit. “Despite the severe abuse and neglect in his history, Lazlo greets every new person with a genuine doggy smile,” Gary described. “We’re overjoyed that his traumatic experiences haven’t dimmed his vibrant personality or behavior. He follows commands reliably, shows no tendencies toward resource guarding, and thrives on training sessions where he picks up new skills effortlessly. His trust in people is profound, and he seems to embrace everyone with an open heart.”
Completely won over, Brett and Gary decided to take Lazlo home that very day, embarking on what would become a transformative fostering experience.
Making It Official
The initial days in their home were filled with a blend of anticipation and joyful discovery for everyone involved. “Within just a few hours, Lazlo had formed a strong bond with us; his constant displays of affection and desire to stay close melted our hearts completely,” Gary reminisced. “Even with his challenging past, he placed his trust in us almost instantly. Watching him revel in simple pleasures like leisurely walks, absorbing the world’s sights and sounds, brought us immense fulfillment. His adorable antics, playful silliness, and the most expressive facial quirks imaginable cemented our deep affection and love for him right from the start.”
Only one month into the fostering period, Brett and Gary knew they couldn’t let Lazlo go-they officially adopted him, making their family complete.
As they spent more quality time together both indoors and outdoors, the couple discovered their favorite shared activities with Lazlo: embarking on invigorating hikes, strolling through wooded trails, engaging in energetic games of tug-of-war and “find it” challenges, and cozying up for relaxed cuddles on the bed or sofa.
“We simply can’t envision our days without him anymore,” Gary affirmed. “Lazlo has become the heart and soul of our family. We often wish we could have had him from puppyhood. While pet ownership comes with significant responsibilities, the boundless love and joy he brings far surpass any challenges.”
Fully aware of the unimaginable cruelty Lazlo suffered before entering their lives, Brett and Gary feel profoundly thankful for the opportunity to shower him with love, security, and happiness every single day.
“There are countless moments when we gaze at him and struggle to comprehend why anyone would ever hurt such an extraordinary dog,” Gary reflected. “At other times, we’re in awe of his incredible courage and resilience-not just for surviving his ordeal, but for retaining the capacity to trust and love so wholeheartedly.”
